I’ve always loved creating my own skincare! From tallow balm to face wash to body butter, it’s so much fun to use simple ingredients to create products that work as well as (or even better!) than what you could buy at the store.

This sugar scrub is one of my favorite parts of my skincare routine. It feels amazing and always leaves my skin fresh, smooth, and rejuvenated.

Even my husband loves how it feels on his skin!

Tips for Success

Use a double boiler – If you melt tallow too quickly, it can burn which will lead to a darker color and unpleasant smell. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can melt tallow in a bowl over a pot of boiling water instead.

Avoid contact with water – Water in sugar scrub can lead to mold, so be careful to avoid getting any water in it, especially during the melting process.

Swap other essential oils – I used frankincense essential oil for this body scrub, but you can use your favorite skin-safe essential oil or essential oil blend. You can even leave out the essential oil if you’d prefer.

Allow time to chill before whipping – If you try to whip it and add the sugar before the mixture has chilled enough, you won’t be able to successfully whip enough air into it. It always warms up as you whip it, so it’s better to start too cold than too warm.

How to Store

Body scrub is shelf-stable and can be stored in a cool, dark location for up to a year. Depending on the purity of your tallow, it may last much longer. (I have seen scrub last at room temperature for over 2 years!)

If you’d like to preserve it for a longer period of time, it can be refrigerated.

FAQs

Is homemade scrub effective?

Yes, the sugar in homemade scrub makes it extremely effective for exfoliating and refreshing your skin.

Why is there tallow in sugar scrub?

Sugar scrub can lead to dry skin, however, the addition of tallow helps prevent this.

Can I use sugar scrub on my face?

No, sugar scrub can be too harsh for your face, and it’s designed for use on other, less sensitive, areas of your body such as your hands and feet.

How often should I use body scrub?

For most people, body scrub should be used 1-2 times per week.

Violet’s Tips for Using Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrub is a wonderful way to exfoliate your skin, and it’s the perfect spa-like treatment for your hands, feet, and anywhere else you have rough patches of skin. Due to its strong exfoliating power, it can be too harsh for your face or other sensitive areas.

Ingredients

  • Tallow – Gently melted in a double boiler or bowl above boiling water. You can render it yourself or purchase ready-to-use tallow. I like using tallow from organic, grass-fed cows or at least cows that I know were raised primarily on grass in a healthy environment.
  • Avocado oil – You can use olive oil if you prefer, however, the smell of olive oil can clash with the essential oil.
  • Sugar – Regular granulated sugar works great, however, you can substitute brown sugar if you prefer a gentler scrub.
  • Essential oil – I used frankincense essential oil in this DIY, but you can use your favorite skin-safe essential oil or essential oil blend. You can also leave it out all together for unscented body butter.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Melted ingredients mixed in a metal bowl on a wooden surface.

Step 1: First, in a mixing bowl, stir together the melted tallow, avocado oil, and essential oil.

Then place the mixture in the fridge to chill for 45-60 minutes, or until it’s firm all the way through. (It doesn’t need to feel rock solid, but it needs to be firm enough to easily whip.)

Whipping body scrub ingredients using a stand mixer.

Step 2: Next, use a stand mixer or electric beater with a whisk attachment to whip air into the chilled mixture. You’ll need to start slow and gently increase the speed as you go.

Whip until it’s light and fluffy and looks similar to a thick icing. This usually takes less than 5 minutes.
