What Makes this Baby Balm Special?

  • Made with 2 non-toxic ingredients that provide lasting moisture and nourishment.
  • Versatile balm that works as a diaper cream, nipple balm, and all-purpose moisturizer for babies, children, and mothers!
  • Easy to make and comes together in minutes.
Labeled ingredients including melted tallow and fractionated coconut oil in glass containers on a wooden surface.

Ingredients

  • Tallow – Melted. I prefer using organic, grass-fed tallow if possible. However, if this isn’t available, I try to find tallow from cows I know were raised in a healthy environment.
  • Fractionated coconut oil – Organic is best, especially since it will be used on babies’ skin. Fractionated coconut oil is a type of MCT oil, so you can substitute organic MCT oil if you prefer.

Tips for Success

Use a double boiler to melt the tallow – If you melt tallow too fast, it can burn which may lead to a darker color and unpleasant oder. If you don’t have a double boiler, melting tallow in a metal bowl over a pot of boiling water also works.

Avoid contamination with water – Water in baby balm can cause bacterial growth so make sure to avoid getting any water in it, especially while melting.

Cool at room temperature – Once the tallow balm has been poured into containers, let it set at room temperature for a smoother finish. After it has set, you can move it to the fridge until it becomes firm.

Benefits of Baby Balm

Lasting moisturize – The combination of tallow and fractionated coconut oil provides incredible natural moisture for skin.

Contains CLA – Tallow has CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which is extremely soothing and moisturizing for skin.

Has the same lipids as skin – Lipids create a protective barrier that helps prevent infection and maintain overall skin cell health.

Infection-fighting properties – Fractionated coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Packed with vitamins and antioxidants – Tallow has vitamins A, D, K, and E and fractionated coconut oil is high in vitamins A and E as well. These can be readily absorbed through the skin and are known for their antioxidant properties.

Baby balm can be used as often as needed anywhere your baby’s skin needs a little extra love. During the winter months, I use it all over my babies after bath time to prevent dry skin.

FAQs

How do I store baby balm?

Baby balm is shelf-stable and can be stored in a cool, dark location for up to a year. Depending on the purity of the tallow, it can last much longer. (I have seen baby balm last at room temperature for over 2 years with no noticeable decrease in quality.)

If you’d like to preserve it longer, it can be refrigerated or even frozen.

Does baby balm with tallow go rancid?

The ingredients in baby balm keep for at least a year at room temperature before going rancid. To extend its shelf-life, you can store it in the fridge.

Should you refrigerate baby balm?

No, it isn’t necessary to refrigerate baby balm as it will keep at room temperature for at least a year. However, if you want it to last even longer, you can refrigerate it.

Can you use baby balm every day?

Yes, baby balm is extremely gentle and can be used every day (or multiple times a day) as needed.

Can I use regular coconut oil for baby balm?

No, regular coconut oil is solid at room temperature and will make this baby balm too firm to use.
