Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: First, in a mixing bowl, stir together the melted tallow, avocado oil, and essential oil.
Place the mixture in the fridge to chill for 45-60 minutes, or until it’s firm. (It doesn’t have to feel rock solid, but it needs to be firm enough to easily whip.)

Step 2: Next, use a stand mixer or electric beater with a whisk attachment to whip air into the body butter. You’ll need to start slow and gently increase the speed.
Whip until it’s light and fluffy and looks similar to a thick icing. This usually takes less than 5 minutes.
Step 3: Once you’re happy with the consistency, scoop into glass jars (or whatever containers you want to store it in). Enjoy as a hydrating moisturizer!

Tips for Success
Use a double boiler – If you melt tallow too fast, you can burn it which may lead to a darker color and unpleasant oder. Melting tallow in a bowl over a pot of boiling water also works.
Avoid contact with water – Water in tallow balm can lead to mold, so make sure to avoid getting any water in it, especially during the melting process.
Swap other essential oils – I used frankincense essential oil for this balm, but you can use your favorite skin-safe essential oil or essential oil blend. You can even leave out the essential oil if you’d like.
Be patient letting it chill before whipping – If you try to whip it before it’s chilled enough, you won’t be able to successfully whip enough air into it. It always warms up as you whip it, so it’s better to start too cold than too warm. If you realize you started whipping it too soon, you can simply put it back in the fridge for a few more minutes.
