Powdered coconut sugar is the perfect replacement for powdered sugar made from refined white sugar! It’s quick and easy and makes the most delicious glaze, icing, and baked goods.

Coconut sugar is my all-time favorite replacement for refined white sugar! It has a lower glycemic index, is full of trace minerals, and can be added to baked goods just like white sugar.

When I recently decided to make cookie frosting, I needed powdered sugar. Since I don’t keep any version of white sugar on hand, I decided to make my own powdered coconut sugar!

How to Store Powdered Coconut Sugar

You can store powdered coconut sugar in an airtight container or ziplock bag for at least a year! Keep it in a cool, dark location to help it maintain it’s freshness and quality.

How to Use Powdered Coconut Sugar

You can use powdered coconut sugar just like you would use regular powdered sugar. It makes delicious glazes, icing, baked goods, and other sweet treats!

Keep in mind that coconut sugar has a tan color, so it won’t give foods that bright white color that regular powdered sugar does. If you’re using it for a glaze or icing, you may want to dye it with plant-based food coloring.

Where Can I Buy Coconut Sugar?

Coconut sugar is available at most grocery and health food stores, including Walmart. I like to buy organic coconut sugar in bulk from Azure Standard.

FAQs

Why does this recipe include tapioca starch? – Coconut sugar naturally has a slight amount of moisture, so you need starch to help it turn to powder. Store-bought confectioners sugar also has starch to prevent clumping.

Can I substitute anything for the tapioca starch? – If you don’t want to use tapioca starch, you can use cornstarch or arrowroot powder instead.

Do I have to use a food processor? – No, you could also use a high quality blender or spice grinder to turn the sugar into powder.

Place the coconut sugar and tapioca starch in a food processor.

Blend until the sugar is light and powdery. The length of time this takes will vary depending on the amount you’re making and how high-powered your food processor is.
