Gentle and moisturizing, baby balm with tallow is exactly what your little one’s skin craves! It’s simple to make and will provide lasting nourishment to keep their skin healthy.

Tallow is my favorite clean skincare DIY, and I love using my tallow balm recipe on my skin daily. But when I was pregnant with my first baby, I knew I wanted something designed especially for her skin.

I formulated this baby balm especially for little ones’ skin with no essential oils or other fragrances. Fractionated coconut oil is also added for additional nourishment and its antibacterial properties.

Since this balm is completely nontoxic, it also works great as a nipple balm for breastfeeding mothers. This is something naturally-minded moms can’t afford to live without!

Benefits of Baby Balm

Lasting moisturize – The combination of tallow and fractionated coconut oil provides incredible natural moisture for skin.

Contains CLA – Tallow has CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which is extremely soothing and moisturizing for skin.

Has the same lipids as skin – Lipids create a protective barrier that helps prevent infection and maintain overall skin cell health.

Infection-fighting properties – Fractionated coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for babies’ skin.

Packed with vitamins and antioxidants – Tallow has vitamins A, D, K, and E and fractionated coconut oil is high in vitamins A and E as well. These can be readily absorbed through the skin and are known for their antioxidant properties.

Baby Balm Uses

Gentle diaper cream – Baby balm provides rich moisture and gentle antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for the diaper area. It’s even safe to use with cloth diapers!

Natural moisturizer – Safe for the most sensitive skin, this is the perfect moisturizer for babies and moms.

Nontoxic nipple balm – Every breastfeeding mom needs a soothing cream, and this balm is safe for the most sensitive areas. Due to the simple, natural ingredients, there’s no need to worry about the baby ingesting a small amount while nursing!

Tips for Success

Use a double boiler – If you melt tallow too fast, it can burn which may lead to a darker color and bad oder. If you don’t have a double boiler, melting tallow in a metal bowl over a pot of boiling water also works.

Avoid contamination with water – Water in baby balm can cause bacterial growth so make sure to avoid getting any water in it, especially while melting.

Cool at room temperature – Once the tallow balm has been poured into containers, let it set at room temperature for a smoother finish. After it has set, you can move it to the fridge until it becomes firm.

How to Store

Baby balm is shelf-stable and can be stored in a cool, dark location for up to a year. Depending on the purity of the tallow, it can last much longer. (I have seen baby balm last at room temperature for over 2 years with no noticeable decrease in quality.)

If you’d like to preserve it longer, it can be refrigerated or even frozen.

Violet’s Tips for Applying

Baby balm can be used as often as needed anywhere your baby’s skin needs a little extra love. During the winter months, I use it all over my babies after bath time to prevent dry skin.

Ingredients

  • Tallow – Melted. I prefer using organic, grass-fed tallow if possible. However, if this isn’t available, I try to find tallow from cows I know were raised in a healthy environment.
  • Fractionated coconut oil – Organic is best, especially since it will be used on babies’ skin. Fractionated coconut oil is a type of MCT oil, so you can substitute organic MCT oil if you prefer.
