When my husband went gluten-free and we stopped buying processed foods, most things were easy to replace. But not fried onions!

For a while we did without, and I didn’t even attempt to make a good green bean casserole. But this simple method changed everything!

These fried onions are a delicious homemade substitute for store-bought fried onions, and they make everything from casseroles to sandwiches taste incredible! My toddler would eat them all plain if I let her.

Why You’ll Love Gluten-Free Fried Onions

Quick and easy – It only takes a few minutes to make delicious fried onions!

Perfect casserole topping – These take homemade green bean casserole (and other dishes) to the next level!

Better than store-bought – Made with avocado oil and no flour or additives, these are so much better than anything you could get in the store.

Rich flavor – With a deliciously rich onion flavor, these are the ultimate topping for just about anything you can think of!

How to Store Gluten-Free Fried Onions

Once they have cooled completely you can store gluten-free fried onions in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can I Freeze Gluten-Free Fried Onions?

Yes, fried onions can be frozen in an airtight container for 2-3 months. If you use them frequently, make a big batch to keep in the freezer for anytime you need them!

How to Use Gluten-Free Fried Onions

There are so many delicious ways to eat fried onions! The options are endless, but here are a few of my favorite ideas:

  • Topping green bean casserole and other casseroles
  • Over baked or mashed potatoes
  • In sandwiches and wraps
  • In dips
  • Hamburger and hotdog topping
  • Over pasta dishes
  • Substitute for croutons in salad
  • Over scrambled eggs or in egg bakes

Tips for Making Fried Onions Crispy

Make sure the oil is hot enough – To test the oil, dip the end of a wooden spoon or chopstick into it. If it sizzles and bubbles, it’s hot enough.

Don’t crowd the onions too much – If you don’t have a large enough pan, you can fry the onion slices in batches.

Cool onion slices on paper towels – This will help absorb access oil which can make the onion slices soggy.

Let cool completely before storing – If the onions are still warm when you place them in a container, they will get soggy.

Then pour the avocado oil into a large pan and heat it on medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the onions.

To test if the oil is hot enough, dip the end of a wooden spoon or chopstick into it. If it sizzles and bubbles, it’s time to add the onions. If the oil starts to smoke, let it cool down a little bit before frying them.

Fry the onions until they turn golden brown and get crispy, stirring frequently. The time this takes can vary depending on the size of your skillet, the temperature of the oil, and the thickness of your onion slices.

There are just a few seconds between perfectly golden brown and burnt, so make sure to watch them closely. Also, keep in mind that they will continue cooking slightly once they have been removed from the oil.
