What Makes this One-Dish Meal Special?

  • Hearty 30-minute dinner made with simple kitchen staples.
  • Healthy recipe the whole family will love!
  • Perfect budget meal using ground beef, cabbage, and other affordable ingredients.
Labeled ingredients on a wooden table including ground beef, salt and pepper, cabbage, garlic, diced tomatoes, onion, tomato sauce, paprika, and bone broth.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef – If you prefer, you can use ground turkey or pork instead.
  • Medium cabbage head – You can substitute two bags of shredded coleslaw mix instead.
  • Canned diced tomatoes
  • Tomato sauce
  • Bone broth – You can substitute regular beef broth or even water if you need to.

Tools Needed

  • Large sauté pan with lid – For this recipe, I recommend using a stainless steel pan rather than cast iron. Unless your cast iron is extremely well seasoned, the acidity of the tomato sauce can break down the cast iron seasoning as it’s simmering.

Tips for Success

Don’t drain the fat – You don’t want to lose all that delicious flavor! Besides, fat-free is no longer considered the healthiest choice.

Use rich broth Homemade bone broth gives this dish a richness and depth of flavor you can’t mimic with store-bought ingredients. However, if you don’t have any, it’s still delicious with store-bought broth or even water.

Let it simmer – It’s delicious served right away, but if you have a few extra minutes to let it simmer, the flavors will become richer and more complex.
