How to Make Tallow Whipped Body Butter

Tallow is one of the best skincare ingredients that we have recently rediscovered. It has been used for many things all throughout history, but, until recently, it seemed like this wonderful product had been all but forgotten about. Whipped body butter is one of my favorite uses of tallow. It’s luxuriously moisturizing and has so many amazing benefits! I enjoy using it daily in my skincare routine.

What is Tallow?

People have been making tallow for thousands of years from beef suet, the purest and highest quality fat in a cow. In modern times, we’ve almost forgotten about some of the less glamorous parts of a cow such as the bones and fat, but thankfully tallow is making a comeback! It is a luxurious skincare product and has many other uses as well including in cooking and in candle making.

What’s So Great About Tallow?

I could go on and on about the skincare benefits of tallow which I’ve seen first-hand! Here’s why it works so well:

  • It contains the same lipids found in human skin. Lipids create a protective, yet permeable barrier that prevents infection, maintains moisture, flexibility, and structure of the cell.
  • It is believed to prevent dryness at the cellular level without suffocating the skin’s barrier.
  • Contains CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
  • Contains vitamins A, D, K, and E, and antioxidants.

Where to Purchase

There are numerous places you can buy tallow! I recommend checking your local health food store, local butcher, or ordering it online. You can also buy raw suet and purify it yourself (there are many tutorials available online). Suet is most commonly found through local farmers or butchers.

Tallow Whipped Body Butter

This body butter is extremely moisturizing and can be used anywhere on the face and body. For sensitive skin, you can skip the essential oil, or you can give it your favorite scent and additional benefits by adding an essential oil or blend.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tallow

  • 1/4 cup avocado oil

  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon essential oil of choice (see note)

  • Tools
  • Double boiler (or metal bowl and pot)

  • Electric mixer with whisk attachment

Directions

  • Slowly melt the tallow in a double boiler or by setting the tallow in a metal bowl over a pot of boiling water.
  • Add the avocado oil and stir gently.
  • Put into fridge to chill until the mixture is firm, but not yet hard.
  • Using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment, start beating the mixture on a slow speed until it begins to get smooth.
  • (Optional) Add your essential oil(s) and continue beating on slow speed until they are integrated into the mixture.
  • Beat the cream on high speed until it is light and fluffy.
  • Scoop into a glass jar and store at room temperature.

Notes

  • Essential Oils: My favorite essential oil for body butter is frankincense, however, you can get creative and add your favorite skin-safe oil or oil blend!
