Decorate with Rich Colors
Using warm, rich colors in your decorating will always create a cozier atmosphere! While there are some beautiful light colored Christmas color palettes, Christmas decor including classic greens, reds, and browns make for a cozier home.
Homey Lighting
Especially in the evenings, use warm lamps instead of overhead lights. Lamps always create a cozier home, and the dimmer lighting will draw attention to the Christmas tree and any other lighted decorations.
For even more of an old-fashioned Christmas feeling, put electric candles in the windows!
Burn Candles
There’s not much that makes a home cozier than candles!
For ultimate coziness, place candles in various spots throughout your home including on the kitchen windowsill, dining room table, coffee table, bedroom dresser, and even in the bathroom! Just make sure to blow them out when you leave the room.
If you’re like me and don’t like the artificial fragrances, use beeswax candles or unscented candles.
Decorate Your Front Door
The front door is the first thing you see when you come to a home, and it gives you an immediate impression of what the rest of your home will be like. A Christmas wreath is a classic and beautiful way to dress up your door!
Get Out Your Cozy Blankets
Bring lots of cozy blankets into the living room! You can lay them across chairs or couches, or even have a basket of blankets in the corner.
This will encourage people to curl up with a warm blanket and add cozy texture to the room’s decor.
Use Natural Decorations
There’s just something homey about using nature in Christmas decorations! Whether it’s a poinsettia, dried orange slice decorations, or pinecone ornaments, it will make your home cozier.
If you want to go big on natural decorations, get a real Christmas tree or use live evergreen garland!
Pull Out Christmas Books
Not only do festive books add to your decorations, but they encourage people to curl up in front of the Christmas tree to read! If you don’t have many, you can check out a few from the library. Here are some of the best Christmas classics:
- The Night Before Christmas, by Clement Moore
- The Greatest Gift (the book It’s a Wonderful Life was based on), by Philip Van Doren Stern
- A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens

- Letters From Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
- Storybooks for Advent by Arnold Ytreeide

Christmas Baking
Nothing says cozy Christmas like homemade cookies just out of the oven! While I’m definitely not one to recommend eating sugary baked goods all December long, there are plenty of healthier, but no less delicious, Christmas goodies. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Gluten-Free Cranberry Crisp Bars with Leftover Cranberry Sauce

If you don’t have any, print out some pictures from previous years to frame or make a photo album. It makes for a fun Christmas project!
Decorate Every Room
One of the best ways to make your home cozy for Christmas is to keep the holiday spirit going throughout your entire home. Even if you’re not able to go all-out in every room, make sure to add simple Christmassy touches everywhere.
You could use red towels in your bathroom, put up a mini Christmas tree in the kids’ bedroom, place a poinsettia in a hallway, or string lights across your kitchen window. The options are endless!
Christmas Potpourri
This is one of the best ways to make your home smell like a Christmas wonderland! There are so many ideas to create delicious scents, so try different ones all season long.
Use Lots of Christmas Lights
Christmas lights aren’t just for the tree! To make things more festive and cozier, put them everywhere you can. From the mantle to stair railings to draped over windows, Christmas lights are one of the best homey decorations.
